Gary Knight’s Story of Life Change
I moved to Memphis, Tennessee in August 1982 to attend Memphis State University and walk on their football team. I attended Union Avenue Baptist Church and was active in many areas of church life. That same fall, I asked my dorm RA to go to church with me. Bill accepted and over Christmas break, Bill became the youth minister.
I went back in the spring and volunteered in the youth ministry wherever Bill needed. We spent many hours serving and doing life together. 1986 was my junior year, and in February I was invited to go to a camp called Centrifuge. I accepted to chaperone my first camp. We drove to Mobile College with several vans of youth and chaperones. At camp, I was immersed in worship, Bible study, and games with a purpose. The wall did not defeat me, I trusted to fall, and I helped others beat their fear of trying something new.
On Wednesday at worship, God spoke to me directly, calling me to full-time service as a youth pastor. I graduated in December 1987, entered New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in August 1988 with Youth Ministry as my focus of study. I married the love of my life in April 1990, graduated Seminary in May 1990 and started my first church in July of 1990.
I have taken groups from four churches to FUGE Camps because I want them to love God and others and to experience life change like I did. My children grew up going to FUGE Camps. This summer, my daughter will be working her first summer on staff with FUGE Camps in Glorieta, New Mexico. The dream lives on…
